Accessibility information

This section is here to give you some extended information about the accessibility features built into this website.

Contrast and font size

High Contrast

The high contrast display shows a black or dark background with white or bright writing whilst keeping the general site layout.

Larger font size

The larger font size will make all text on the screen appear bigger whilst keeping the general site layout.

Navigation

Great care has been taken to make the website easy to navigate. The main navigation items are always on the left of the screen, with the current page highlighted in the list. If further navigation is provided, then it will always be at the top of the page and again the current page is highlighted in the list. If images are disabled by your browser, then the navigation elements will have relevant coloured backgrounds. If webpage colours are disabled, then the main navigation will appear with a block next to the current page, and the current page from the minor navigation will display with dotted lines under the text. All navigation has been tested with VISCHECK software and a 'Colour blind webpage filter' and is accessible for colour blind users.

Skip navigation

There are two links provided at the top right of the website. These are the first items on the every page and are there to allow operators with screen readers the ability to skip over any navigation links to the main content area of the page. They operate as follows:

  • Skip to sub-navigation: Moves the focus to the pages sub-navigation section. If there is none, then focus goes to the main page content.
  • Skip to content: Moves the focus to the pages main content area.

Access keys

We have provided a series of keyboard shortcuts intended to help users who have difficulty using pointing devices such as a mouse. This list has been kept to a minimum and only uses the number keys. The reasons for keeping this to a minimum are for simplicity and also that it is otherwise easy to assign access keys that conflict with keys that are already assigned by the user's assistive software.

Images

All images have been placed with a text alternative, so that you can understand what the picture is conveying even if it does not load or you have chosen to browse with images switched off. These 'Alt' tags also provide help for those using screen readers.

Alternating images

There are no alternating images used within this site.

PDF Documents

There are several pdf documents included in the website. We do not currently have an html equivalent for all of them, but you can always ask for a printed copy from the school office.

Printing

The site has been prepared so that when printing, a white background is used. The header and navigation are not printed. If the user has selected a larger font whilst browsing the site, then a larger font is used on the printout.

Colour

The website has been prepared with colours that give suffient difference in brightness and luminosity between writing and background, and this can be enhanced by selecting the 'high contrast' menu item. Within the content management system, the user is limited to text colours that will continue to provide the required brightness and luminosity ratios.

Tabular information

To aid screen readers, tables have a summary section (where relevant) and all headings are identified as headings and not data.

Links and Document downloads

When clicking on a web link the website should open the page in the current browser window. However when selecting a document for viewing the website should open this in a new window (This prevents users from accidentally closing the browser window when they close the document).

Javascript

The website does not require javascript to operate. However to view the 'Google' map interactively on your browser, you must have javascript enabled, otherwise a static map will be displayed.

Browser compatability

This website has been tested with the following web browsers:

  • Mozilla Firefox V2,V3 (Windows)
  • Internet Explorer 6 (Windows)
  • Internet Explorer 7 (Windows)
  • Mozilla Firefox V2,V3 (Mac OSX Leopard)
