Policies - Homework Policy

  • We recognise the important contribution that play, interaction with adults, conversation, sport, music, art, drama and other leisure activities outside school make to the all round development of our children.

  • Homework starts informally in the Reception Year, becoming increasingly formalised so that in Years 5 and 6 it is an integral part of children’s learning and acts as preparation for the demands of secondary education. It is expected that all homework will be handed in on time. We intend that children will start by spending a small amount of time (e.g. 10 minutes per day reading in Year R) on homework, increasing to about 2.5 hours+ per week in Year 6 (including reading).

  • Homework is intended to be a way of enabling parents to see what their child is learning at school, consolidating and reinforcing skills learnt, preparing for the next lesson, encouraging the children to become independent learners and developing the skills to use many different resources.

  • This Homework Policy is a statement of intent. The teaching staff will normally keep to this policy, but there are sometimes circumstances when the setting of homework may be inappropriate e.g. school productions.

  • As part of home/school policy, parents/carers are requested to set aside time for the children to complete their homework, so that they can see that it is valued, and help their children to meet deadlines.

  • A Reading Record/Home School Message Book (Years R, 1 and 2) / Homework Diary (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6) will accompany the reading book / homework. Parents are requested to complete the Diary as necessary to comment on the book or the homework and return it to school with the work.

  • Parents’ comments on children’s homework, including reading, are greatly valued. Teachers will respond as appropriate to comments in Reading Records/ Home School Message Books and Homework Diaries. Appropriate feedback will be given within a reasonable timescale.

  • The school will offer an after school homework club on one day each week when clubs run.

Reading

Children are expected to practise their reading at home daily for at least 10 minutes. In the early stages, sound cards or word cards containing current individual sight vocabulary will be given as appropriate and children will be encouraged to share picture books or appropriate stories with an interested adult or older sibling. In the later stages, children will be encouraged to read increasingly difficult texts supervised or questioned by an adult, or to read together.

Books will be changed regularly at school.

Books sent home will be of an appropriate level for the child to enjoy at home but, at Key Stage One, word cards, work sheets or activities encouraging recall or prediction may be included alongside theses.

From Year Two, book reviews may be asked for at appropriate intervals.

Most children will have library books or books from the classroom libraries that they take home for enjoyment and pleasure.

Parents will be requested, at all stages, to carry on having shared reading times with their children.

Spelling Homework

In the Early Years Foundation Stage and phonic work linked to spelling will be sent home linked to daily learning, as appropriate and learning will be assessed informally. In Key Stage 2 all spellings to learn will be sent home on Friday for testing, in an age appropriate format, the following Friday

Year R:

Based on phonic work and given as and when appropriate.

Years 1&2:

Based on word families or high frequency words. This may take the form of an investigation. Children will start being given up to ten words to learn when appropriate for their level of understanding.

Pandas:

Revision and extension of Year 2/3/4 work as appropriate and in accordance with the Primary Strategy. This involves consolidation of earlier learning and learning of new high frequency words and new word families. Homework will consist of investigations and up to 20 spellings to learn.

Tigers:

Revision and extension of Year 3/4/5 work as appropriate and in accordance with the Primary Strategy. This involves consolidation of the learning of high frequency words where necessary and learning of new word families. Homework will consist of investigations and up to 20 spellings to learn.

Dolphins:

Weekly spelling words will be sent home, as appropriate, with the addition of spelling challenges and investigations. This includes consolidation of the learning of high frequency words when appropriate.

All children will be encouraged to learn their spellings by the following method:

LOOK at the word, its shape, spelling, patterns…

SAY it aloud to yourself

FEEL the shape of the word with your finger

COVER it up

WRITE it from memory

CHECK you have got it right. Repeat 4 more times. If correct go on to the next word. If not, repeat a further 5 times.

Other English Homework

All classes in Key Stage 2 will be given one other piece of English homework each week. This may take the form of reading comprehension, preparation for writing, language puzzles and activities etc.

English homework will be given out on Tuesday and collected in the following Monday.

Mathematics Homework

As soon as they are ready and, for some children, this will be in the Reception Year, all children will be expected to practise number bonds and, when these have been learned, multiplication tables, at home. These will be practised and tested on a regular basis in school and certificates given for each group learned. When all number bonds are known a badge will be awarded. The same will happen for the multiplication tables.

Class based mathematics homework

Ladybirds:

Informal counting practice; grouping; shape recognition; practical application e.g. weighing, cooking, playing with water etc.

Monkeys:
