Newsletters - November 2009

Dear Children of Ashford Hill

As you can probably see we have a new newsletter but this time it is for children instead of adults. This will be created every half term so that you can catch up with the latest news about almost anything. Hopefully every half term will be full of lots of exciting events so that there will be lots of news for you and your friends to look at.

Ladybirds

"In Ladybirds we have been drawing bodies and labeling the different parts, as you can see from this photo. We have found out about Diwali and we enjoyed the story. We also did some Diwali dancing. We all learnt the story of the enormous turnip for Harvest."

Monkeys

"Monkeys class have been learning about Diwali. We have enjoyed learning the Diwali story and acting it. We made Diva lamps and decorated them beautifully. We have even learnt a song about Divas. We made our own Diwali sweets but most of us didn't like them! We had a special visitor who taught us the Diwali dance."

Pandas

"On Tuesday 22nd September the class went on a school trip to Tidgrove as part of our topic on rocks and soils. We learnt lots of things about the past. Then someone took us on a tour. Finally we got to dig.

Before half-term we did a treasure hunt. First all the maps led to the same place. Then we made a map. After that we buried our own treasure with a trowel. We measured how long it was to our treasure with a trundle wheel. Finally we swapped maps and then found the treasure!"

Tigers

"On the morning of Wednesday 13th October, Tigers Class went to Milestones Museum. The most interesting thing was probably the Thorneycroft tractor and when we got to dress up. Charlie dressed up as a general from the British army. It was spectacular and brilliant and everyone had a really good day."

Dolphins

"Our overall topic this term, in Dolphins, has been India. In maths we have been learning and calculating mode, median, mean and range.

For Literacy we have been writing stories and Rudyard Kipling biographies.

In art we have been doing batik on the Diwali story. It was really good fun!"

Extras

All year 6s were trained to be school guides and they all passed.

Our school football team came 2nd in the small schools football tournament.

One afternoon, a group of Monkeys went to Kingsclere for a skipping festival. They learnt to skip forwards and backwards. They skipped with a partner and learnt some new skipping rhymes.

A group of Dolphins went to the Mayor's Parlour in Basingstoke. They did lots of different activities to prepare for a children's Question Time.

Sports News

On Tesday the 20th October 2009, George, Paul, William, Adam, Sam, Ryan, Jack and Louis were ready to go to a tounament, which was the first football tournament of the season. In the first match we lost 2-1 because we weren't co-operating as a team. Then we played a better match winning 2-1. Will scored 2 goals, Paul scored 1 goal and Louis hit the crossbar. Someone did a dirty tackle on Louis so unfortunately he had to come off.
